Many off-the-shelf chip solutions or ASSPs are designed for industries that differ from yours. If the modem changes in response to that industry, so must you. As chips become more functional, the one you need may soon be obsolete — and its replacement may include features that you don’t need. Consider the case of early CATV modulators and demodulators. These chips originally integrated a wide variety of modem functions because they were designed before the CATV industry had standardized. Although well suited for lower-rate terrestrial microwave links, they soon became unusable as terrestrial modems when the CATV industry removed much of the variability and added complicated access layers. The chip was discontinued. Since this area of the terrestrial microwave link market is miniscule compared to the CATV market, manufacturers have little economic incentive to continue supplying the chip.
